Description

Shots of apples at Birmingham wholesale market and on display in a supermarket (both English and French). Interview with a wholesale trader who prefers to sell French apples which he thinks are better than the English grown ones. We also see newly arrived French grown Cox's. Next whilst standing in an orchard Bob Hall gives a potted history of the growth in popularity of the French Golden Delicious apple (some cartoon drawnings are also used). Two thirds of all apples sold in Britain are now Golden Delicious. Interview with grower Richard Beech who prefers the Cox. Next at Great Whitley in Worcestershire we meet grower Richard Colewell who is growing English Golden Delicious. He talks about the climate differences. One reason the French apple has taken off with growers is that EEC payments are geared to the size of apples which benefits the larger French fruit. We then visit Wye Fruit Ltd at Ledbury which is a co-operative of growers. We see apples being graded and sorted on conveyer belts. The final section are vox pops with supermarket customers asked to taste and say which they prefer - French or English apples.
