Description

We open with a man, who is learning to drive, getting into a car (an Austin A30) with his instructor. The commentator explains that all skills have to be learnt and we cut to Janet Martin who is also a learner but in her case she is arriving at a Boots store for her first day of employment. The branch is on Mansfield Road in Sherwood and we begin with the wrong way for her to start - she is not met by the manager and finds herself behind the counter faced with a wall of customers and soon overwhelmed. The scene is repeated in the correct way where she is met by the manager, is shown where to change into her uniform by a female member of staff, is fully briefed and supplied with a mentor who gives her on-the-job training in stock control, service and the use of the cash register. Towards the end of the film the man learning to drive at the start appears again and his L plates are disposed of in the shop's waste bin.
