Description

The programme is presented by Joanne Malin and Linda Ohlson-Coppin.

Linda goes on location in Lichfield with the Walsall based film-maker Simon Horton who is shooting his film 'Boyfriends' Interview with Horton about his desire to direct and how he is trying to avoid the usual stereotypes found in gay cinema. Also an interview with Robert Curbishley who plays Alex in the film. Shots of Horton directing the cast on location.

'Boyfriends'
Alex meets a series of unsuitable men who answer his small ad in Gay Times looking for a relationship. He eventually finds Mr. Right.

Joanne Malin Interviews Steve Ryde, the producer of ‘Suckers’ a First Cut film from 1995, now working as a producer with CITV in Birmingham (Children's ITV). An extract from Suckers is shown.

We then continue with location shots from the production of Stolen Baby in Milton Keynes. The director Faye Gilbert, and producer Rachel Shadick talk in the style of a video diary about the challenges they have faced.

'Stolen Baby'
The film is narrated by Annie, the troubled woman. She sees a baby in a pram outside a shop and walks away with it, the narration justifying her action. She brings it home and appears happy and content, until she realises what she thought was a baby girl, is in fact a baby boy.
She becomes overwhelmed by the situation and tries to leave the baby in various places before eventually leaving him hanging on a fence post above a river. The baby falls into the river, realising her mistake Annie saves him. We learn Annie is treated like a hero for saving the baby, getting her picture in the paper. At the end of the film she sees a mother on a bus ignoring her children. Her narration says some women don’t deserve to have children.

Back in the studio, Joanne Malin then interviews Claire McFall, director and Carol Byrne, producer of ‘Bull Ring Tales’ about why they chose to document the Bullring market on film.

'Bull Ring Tales'
This is a documentary filmed in the Bull Ring market in Birmingham. It centres on market trader Carl Spiegel who describes his feelings on hearing that the old market was to be redeveloped. We see views of the market and its traders and there are also contributions from a woman who has been shopping there for nearly seventy years, local historian Doctor Carl Chinn and Councillor Spector who is the city planning chair about the new plans.

Next Linda Ohlson-Coppin interviews Stephen Loveless, writer of ‘Washing Strangers’.

'Washing Strangers'
An unwilling participant in a community service scheme, becoming a carer for a wheelchair bound Pakistani man. The young man shows animosity for his elderly patient - he handles him roughly, the older man seemingly scared of him. The young man is goaded by others in the scheme and gets into a fight, ending up in hospital. When he goes back to his job the older man notices the marks on his face and the two men appear to come to a mutual understanding.
