MACE collections and archive practice have provided the focal point for several PhD theses from investigations of representation to the legal issue of film copyright. There are many ways researchers can work with archive film in research projects from innovations in technology (cloud storage, crowdsourcing/VR technologies) to those focused on content and use of the collections (studies of representation, media histories, reminiscence therapy) and questions of heritage (the conservation of moving image media, archival standards and practice).
We work closely with students and academics and have supported a number of PhD students. MACE is partnered with the AHRC-funded Midlands3Cities Doctoral Training Partnership (M3C) which seeks to develop placements, specialist training and collaborative projects of mutual benefit to research students and partner organisations and to add value to students' research projects, developing professional and employability skills and providing unique opportunities for knowledge exchange.
If you are undertaking research or thinking about studying for a postgraduate degree or PhD and would like to discuss how MACE could support your project please get in touch. Our catalogue can be searched online, non-digitised titles can be viewed at MACE free of charge or you can request a digital copy for home viewing for a small fee. This specialist service is dependent on the condition of the material, the format it is held on as well as obtaining permission from the copyright holders.
To keep up-to-date with MACE’s activities and to find out where our films are being screened visit our website where you can also find our blog and sign up to our newsletter, or like us on Facebook and follow us on X.
