The programme is presented by Andy Craig. Author Richard Mabey walks through Frithsden Beeches near Birkhamsted in Hertfordshire pointing out ancient pollarded trees. Sculptor Andrew Darke talks about his work with wood and we see examples of his work. At Pepper Wood near Bromsgrove in Worcestershire, David Ward who is a volunteer with the Woodland Trust, talks about coppicing and why it is done to forests. Next at the Greenwood Trust near Telford, Andy demonstrates the tools that can be used to work with unseasoned wood. He then takes to the River Severn in a coracle, an ancient wooden boat which is made locally. We then visit the Sherwood Forest visitors centre near Edwinstowe. Interview with landscape architect Clive Gordon about the changing area, the decline in coal mining and the rise of leisure usage. Brief views of the new Center Parcs holiday resort which has been built locally and view of the Major Oak in Sherwood Forest. Next Andy helps a group of children from Newtown Junior School in Sandwell plant new trees in an old marl pit (probably in the West Bromwich area). Interview with Joan Davidson from the Think Green Campaign about plans for urban forests.
