The film shows the members of The Theatre of the Unemployed improvising and taking part in workshop exercises in their rehearsal rooms and performing on the street in Birmingham. They put on a 'This is Your Life' spoof in front of a banner for the Ladywood Labour Party in Balsall Heath and later a pastiche of 'The Price is Right' in Victoria Square in the city centre. They highlight the problems of being unemployed and battling against the system using the character of job-seeker Nigel Nobody (played by group founder Chris Rozanski). Throughout the film there are interviews with the members of the group about their aims, funding issues and future hopes. We also see the group on a protest march (cut to a Billy Bragg song) and later in rehearsal for an ambitious new production of a Greek comedy by Aristophanes (including a dance class with a song by Sade heard). Finally we see parts of the Greek play which has a circus theme and is performed in a marquee in a park complete with a fire-eater.
