Description

Programme introduced by Zia Mohyeddin. The first item is a film report from Birmingham about the work of the new Ethnic Relations Unit of West Midlands Fire Service. There are interviews with the Chief Fire Officer Brian Fuller and members of the ERU: Wayne McCollin; Jagtar Singh; and Jim Palmer. We see activities at the central fire station in Birmingham including a fire engine leaving the station. We also see a reconstruction of an Asian woman calling the fire service from a call box as language difficulties have been identified as an issue in the area. We also see an exercise with the fire service watched by a small crowd as well as Wayne McCollin and a colleague visiting a school to talk to children and Jagtar Singh lecturing a group of Asian women on board the group's touring bus. There are also stills showing fire hazards in Asian family run textile businesses.

Back in the studio Mohyeddin introduces music from Turkey performed by Emin Aldemir, Erol Gocen and Huseyin Turkmenler.

The final item is a Mita Hackett studio interview with the author Mihir Bose about his new book tracing the history of the Aga Khans, a Muslim hereditary dynasty known for their huge wealth.
