Description

Programme presented by Tony Francis. It is eight years since Margaret Thatcher became leader of the Conservative party. In the studio Francis looks at some of the Thatcher souvenirs and novelties that have been produced.

On film Rob Whitehouse visits Woody Enterprises in Birmingham, a firm that makes Thatcher toilet roll holders. Interview with designer Michael Bliss. We then see a short profile of Thatcher including ITN pictures of her becoming Conservative leader in 1975 and winning the 1979 General Election. Jon Lander then interviews: Andrew Alexander of the Daily Mail; Michael White of The Guardian; Adam Butler, Conservative MP for Bosworth; George Gale of the Daily Express; and Joe Ashton, Labour MP for Bassetlaw who give their views on Mrs Thatcher. There are also vox pops with visitors to the public gallery at the House of Commons.

Next in the studio Jon Lander interviews Jim Lester, MP for Beeston about his recent fact finding trip to the Falkland Islands. Recently the Church of England has voted against the views of CND at the General Synod. Reg Harcourt interviews Foreign Office Minister Douglas Hurd on film about Britain’s nuclear deterrent. In the studio Harcourt talks to Reverend Peter Barnett, the vicar of St Michael and All Angels at Walsall and Reverend John Linford, the rector of St Luke’s at Cannock about the church and nuclear weapons issue. There is also film of both church men at work.

The next item is a round up of the current unemployment debate by Jon Lander in the Westminster studio. The final item is a film interview by Rob Whitehouse with Lord Hertford about his politics and infrequent visits to the House of Lords. During the interview he describes Enoch Powell as a ‘disaster’. We see exterior views of Lord Hertford’s home, Ragley Hall in Warwickshire.
