Description

Programme presented by Jon Lander. In the first film item Rob Whitehouse investigates MPs’ interests. Members of Parliament are not forced to declare their interests but in the latest voluntary lists there is growing trend in the amount of consultancy work taken on by members which may compromise their political duties. Interviews with the Labour MP for Bolsover, Dennis Skinner and the Conservative MP for Wellingborough, Peter Fry who have differing views on the issue. After views of parliament Whitehouse interviews the journalist Andrew Roth and the Conservative MP for Northampton South, Michael Morris who defends speaking in parliament for drug firms that he is employed by. The item ends with views of Soho wine bars frequented by MPs.

Next in a regular series in which MPs report on an issue of their choosing the Labour MP for Stoke Central, Mark Fisher looks at the ageing population and problems it poses for the health service. Mark Fisher reports to camera and then talks to Bill Barlow who lost his mother last year. We then see exterior shots of Bucknall Hospital in Stoke on Trent and views of the geriatric wards. Fisher then interviews: Dr John Friend; Irene Slater who works in a care home; and Councillor John Slater from Social Services.

Finally in the studio Reg Harcourt talks to David Owen and David Steel, the joint leaders of the SDP Liberal Alliance about their working relationship.
