Description

Programme presented by Tony Francis.

In a film report Jon Lander visits the SDP conference which is being held at the Assembly Rooms in Derby. We see a few shots of Derby city centre and he interviews Shirley Williams and Roy Jenkins of the SDP.

In a second film report Rob Whitehouse finds out how the popular BBC radio serial 'The Archers' responds to social change. What was once a traditonal serial mainly concerning itself with agricultural issues now reflects many cultural and social issues. Whitehouse interviews editor William Smethhurst, scriptwriter Debbie Cook and actor Bob Arnold and we see the cast in action recording an episode in their Birmingham studio. He also visits Inkberrow in Worcestershire which is said to be the inspiration for the fictional Ambridge of the Archers where he interviews farmers in the local pub to find out how reality compares with the fiction of the radio.

In a third film report Sue Winter interviews Detective Chief Inspector Hannis of the West Midlands Drug Squad and Doctor Ifti Akhter of All Saints Hospital in Birmingham about the dangers of sniffing glue and solvents.

In a final film report Rob Whitehouse visits RAF Cosford in Shropshire where unemployed young people are taking part in a military training course called the Youth Adventure Scheme. We see the teenager boys taking part in the mainly athletic exercises. Interview with Wing Commander Leighton Jenkins and vox pops with young people.

In the studio Reg Harcourt then interviews Gwilym Roberts MP for Cannock (Labour) and Tony Marlow MP for Northampton North (Conservative) about the Cosford project.
