Description

Programme presented by Tony Francis. Last week WPC Yvonne Fletcher was shot dead outside the Libyan Embassy in London. In a film item Central Lobby asks Midlands MPs their opinion of the incident. Interviewed are: Peter Bruinvels MP for Leicester East (Conservative); Clare Short MP for Birmingham Ladywood (Labour); Simon Coombs MP for Swindon (Conservative); Betty Boothroyd MP for West Bromwich East (Labour); and David Winnick MP for Walsall North (Labour).

Next in a film report Jon Lander looks ahead to next week's local council elections. He visits Birmingham where the council is controlled by the Conservatives with a majority of three. We see a council meeting featuring the Lord Mayor Bill Sowton and Lander interviews three of the council leaders in Birmingham: Neville Bosworth (Conservative); Dick Knowles (Labour); and Stephen Kirkham (Liberal). We also see high angle shots of Birmingham city centre and a view of the city council headquarters.

Next on film Reg Harcourt interviews the political lobby correspondent Andrew Roth in Westminster. Finally Jon Lander visits Solihull to profile the local conservative MP John Taylor who is also a member of the European Parliament. We see Taylor both in his local constituency touring an old people's home and working at the European Parliament in Strasbourg. Taylor has decided to concentrate on his MP work and not stand in the next European elections.
