Programme presented by Tony Francis. The first item looks at the role of trade unions in selecting the next leader of the Labour Party. Jon Lander visits Stoke-on-Trent where he sees a debate between party members at the Ceramic and Allied Trade Union headquarters at Hanley where they are decided whether to back Neil Kinnock or Roy Hattersley. We also see pottery production lines at the Royal Doulton works at Burslem. Back in the studio Reg Harcourt interviews Labour leadership candidate Neil Kinnock.
As this is the last programme in the series we see clips from recent reports: Canning Engineering Limited who were being supported by Birmingham County Council are now in receivership; factory roofs being removed to save rates; Labour Militant in Staffordshire; Dave Nellist MP; video nasties; Labour supporters travelling to the Darlington by-election; Arthur Scargill and the miners ballot; and political betting.
Next, on film, Rob Whitehouse reports from Cheadle in Staffordshire about problems within the NHS at a time when workers are considering strike action. We see views of Cheadle including its market and the Cheadle Geriatric Hospital which is based in a former workhouse. Interview with Stuart Fletcher of the North Staffs Health Authority who describes Cheadle as a deprived district in health terms. We see views inside the geriatric hospital showing its poor conditions and facilities. There are also interviews with hospital administrator Pamela Rowe; and John Silverthorne, Secretary of the Community Health Council. Back in the studio Jon Lander interviews Norman Fowler, the Secretary of State for Social Services about spending cuts in the NHS.
The programme ends with clips from celebrity interviews from the series: Ken Dodd; Bill Maynard; Miriam Karlin; Lord Hertford; Liz Fraser; John Wells; Peter Ustinov; Derek Dougan and Lord Sutch.
