Description

Studio introduction from Zia Mohyeddin who links into a special film report from Vera Gilbert who has returned to the Caribbean island of St Vincent which she left in 1966. We see views around Evesham village in St Vincent, including the house she was born in, shots of the island and views of rural life, people attending the local Baptist church and children at Evesham Methodist School. There are interviews with: neighbour Charlotte John; Erry Johnson who remembers walking seven miles to school; Cheryl Johnson who is a teacher in the school; Sir Rupert John who is a former Governor General of the island; local resident Clive Phillips who is seen working in a textile factory and finally resident Adeline John who talks about the role of women in Caribbean society. Vera then meets a local artist who tells her about the history of the indigenous Carib people who lived on the island before the African slaves arrived. We then see musical performances from local groups Naked Roots and Satan and His String Band. Finally we see activity at the harbour in Kingstown, modern housing and Vera briefly talks to two children who have emigrated to the island from England.
