Description

Programme presented in the studio by Tony Francis. The first film report is about Judy Wilson who runs the Nottingham Self Help Groups Project. We see Judy at work in her office and she is interviewed about the value of self help groups which she describes as an untapped source of skill and information. We also see former fireman Ray James who received burns at work visiting another burns victim in hospital as part of the self help scheme and Lorna Weir who is a councillor for Parents Anonymous talking to a mother 'Helen' (identity disguised) who uses the service.

The second film report is a profile of Sheila Hocken from Nottingham who was blind until undergoing an operation at the age of 29. She built up such an affinity with her guide dog Emma that since regaining her sight she has turned to training dogs. We see library pictures of Sheila Hocken walking with Emma in Nottingham city centre (captioned 1975 but probably from ATV Today 5 December 1977) and Sheila with a group of dog owners training their animals in a park. There are also shots of Sheila at home with her dogs as well as Emma's grave.
