Description

Barronia Metals made fuel valves for aircraft during the Second World War. The company was established in 1928 by Major Bullen who invented barronia metal, a copper/tin based alloy that would not corrode and could withstand extremely cold temperatures.

The documentary draws heavily on a collection of 16mm film that was found near Hereford. The anonymous film maker recorded all aspects of life in the Barronia Metals factory in Hereford during World War Two. Testimonies made by former factory workers are illustrated by images from this collection as well as footage from other archives (see 'Full Credits').

Interviewees include:
Dr. Maureen Beauchamp; Albert West; Chris Tomlinson; Betty Webb; Neville Dawe; Margaret Palamountain; Joyce Davies; Peter Yemm; Daphne Grey; D 'Alf' Jenkins; Doug Parry.

Interviewees discuss the conditions in the factory; the development of the valves; the inspection of the finished valves; leisure activities, including Home Guard duties, food, dancing and football. There are also references to The Knight, the company's in-house magazine.
