Description

Capper describes crime as the biggest problem but there is also a subsidiary problem, the traffic problem.

When asked what ‘comes first’ he says crime must come first, but he will also focus on traffic as he has had a great interest in the problem. He thinks that currently the system of wardens and meters are working well but he would stress to people to park in the flow of traffic.

Gillman asks what advice the Chief Constable would give to a young constable joining the force. Sir Derrick says that a young constable must be courteous to the public, as the ‘man on the beat’ is best public relations you can have for the force. When asked what sort of recruits they are getting, he replies that the force is taking in a good standard of recruit, not as fast as they’d like, but a good standard.
