The pupils of Hatton School play all the roles.
We open with a song about the generation gap as children rail against their parents not understanding them. We are introduced to Julie who does not fit in with the other teenagers because of her lack of interest in fashion and her hopes to become a mining engineer. She dreams of a relationship with sensitive boy Rob. This dream comes true in a scene filmed in the grounds of Tutbury Castle in Staffordshire.
The teengers find out about plans for a new coal mine in their area and organise a protest campaign which Julie is against because of her future career plans. Rob is drawn into the protest and is persuaded to fire bomb the mine surveyor's cabin - a misguided plan which Julie tries to prevent.
