Notes

Story number - 1933. Athelstan Popkess was the chief of Nottingham's police force. He was suspended by local Labour councillors because he had brought in Metropolitan police officers in to the city to investigate the council over a controversial visit to East Germany. Popkess was forced to leave office in December 1959 shortly before he was due to retire.
