Jill Fraser reports about marriage in the 1980s asking various people if the institution of marriage is in decline as divorce rates continue to climb and more people choose to live together outside marriage? Library clips from marriage ceremonies. Interview with Fred Marlow of the Leicester Christian Fellowship; elderly married couple Gwendoline and Cecil Ward; Reverend Mike Parsons of St Augustine’s Church in Derby; Su Evans and Richard Patching who have chosen to live together; and Joyce Huggett. The item also includes vox pops on marriage. Jill Fraser piece to camera about marriage in the Asian community and then interview with Mabel Uppal whose mother had an arranged marriage.

Back in the studio Jill Fraser continues with a discussion about marriage and religion. Taking part are Fred Marlow and Mike Parsons from the film report who are joined by: Harish Mehra of Relate; Reverend Tony Gough and his wife Jan Gough who are Christian marriage counsellors from Leicester. The programme ends with a musical performance from the Christian singer Chris Eaton who sings ‘When My Heart Breaks’.
