This film presents a narrative of a situation in which a poor family receive an inheritance through an aunt's life insurance policy with The Co-operative Society in Long Eaton. We see the family; mother, father, daughter, son and baby as over the course of a day their fortunes are improved with the knowledge of the money left to them. The daughter leaves the family home and is late for work. She can be seen running to the factory where she becomes the object of her fellow workers' amusement. The schoolboy son leaves the family home and fights with three other boys after they mock his torn clothing. The father walks through the town stopping briefly at Midland Street before entering 'Community House - Unemployed Welfare Centre'. There are scenes of the solicitor 'Lewis' who makes his way to the family home by car to deliver the news of their inheritance. On learning this news, the mother accompanies 'Lewis' to his offices and the People's Hall to collect money and dividends. The sequence ends with the family buying clothing at the Co-operative Emporium in Long Eaton.
