The film begins with an illustrative map of Long Eaton and the surrounding area featuring the rivers Trent, Soar, Erewash and Derwent. The route of the mobile hardware shop is painted on the map as the van moves from village to village. The day for the hardware van begins outside the Long Eaton Co-operative Society shop in Long Eaton where the driver, Ken Hollingsworth, is seen re-stocking. A point-of-view shot from the front of the van shows the route it takes out of the town and we see the River Trent as it crosses the river at Sawley on his way to Castle Donington. At Castle Donington Ken stops briefly at the Co-op shop and then on to Diseworth, where a family are seen shopping and Long Whatton, where the driver collects a roll of fencing from the village's Co-op shop. Another point-of-view shot shows the road he takes to Sutton Bonington where he sells a pan to a small girl on a very big bicycle and then stops outside the village Co-op shop. At West Leake he stops at The Star public house and then on to the village post office where he sells a chimney sweep's brush. Next is Kingston and East Leake, where he visits the Co-op shop and then on to Gotham (after crossing the railway line) and passing the Cuckoo Bush pub. Barton in Fabis with its thatched cottages is next and then through the gatehouse at Thrumpton Hall. At Ratcliffe on Soar we see steam traction engines parked in a field and then to Kegworth via a ford and the bridges over the River Soar. He has a cup of tea outside a house in Lockington and visits the derelict chapel in Hemington. Then it's back over the River Trent at Sawley and returning to the main Co-op store at Long Eaton.
