Description

The film shows how measures can be taken around the home to prevent accidents. There are case studies used to illustrate how a particular accident could have been avoided. Firstly we see Mrs Whitehouse who at 76 years old is maintaining an active a healthy lifestyle. She is shown walking to the shops and cooking a meal.

Mrs Ward, who has arthritis talks to camera at home about a recent fall. We then see inside a kitchen which has shelves and cupboards that are too high to reach. Inside a modern old people's flat we see shelves and cupboards that are at a lower height and a device that prevents saucepans from being tipped over. Further case studies are show with Mrs Botting who has poor eyesight and Mrs Austin who has mobility problems. Miss Paige who lives in an upstairs maisonette describes breaking her hip.

The film then considers the problems of trip hazards including loose rugs which can be solved with a fitted carpet. We then see Mrs Harris who has handles in her back yard so she can cope with the uneven surface. Cleaning windows and hanging curtains are also said to be a common cause of accidents. We also see a bath fitted with handles and a non-slip mat.

Finally we see two women from Meals on Wheels visiting and a scheme in which school pupils visit elderly people.
