The film opens with views of the town of Stourport on Severn and views of the river. The commentary talks about the dangers of swimming in the river. We are then introduced to Edwin Jones, headmaster of Stourport County Secondary Modern School who is seen watching a group of pupils boarding a bus. Later sitting in a deck chair Mr Jones spots a magazine advert for Landscape & Gardens (Wolverhampton) Ltd and decides to build an open-air swimming pool at the school. He tells the school in a speech (not heard) in the assembly hall. Next we see posters for various fundraising events and a large barometer outside the school indicating the rising total of funds. Jones next views an outdoor demonstration pool at Codsall. The building work then begins. The early stages are performed by boys marking out the plot and then digging a large hole with shovels. The contractors arrive and the boys help carry large blocks to form the structure of the pool. We then see the stars of Associated Television’s Lunch Box programme (Noele Gordon with Jerry Allen and his Trio and producer Reg Watson) arriving at the school for an evening fundraising concert on 28 April 1958 (the concert itself is not shown). After more scenes of the pool being completed, we see the official opening which is performed by the Mayor of Stourport alongside the television sports commentator Peter West and the cross-channel swimmer Bill Pickering. The final section shows a group of pupils being taught to swim by the school’s PE teacher.
