Description

Joyce Skinner provides a commentary giving a description of various places of historical interest. The film begins by outlining the stops of the cruise. We begin with shots of the SS Uganda in the port of Split in Yugoslavia (Croatia) and views of the historic city. We then travel on board the Uganda to Santorini. The tourists ride mules up the steep steps to Thera where we see views of the cathedral and local craft shops. After views of the volcanic island we travel to Dikili in Turkey and then visit the ruins at Pergamum including the Asklepion. There are also views over the city of Bergama and then in the city we briefly visit an onyx workshop before seeing further street scenes. After boarding the ship again the next stop is Limassol in Cyprus. We visit an amphitheatre at Curium, view Roman mosaics on the island and also see Kolossi Castle. We then sail to Egypt where the visits include ancient artefacts at Memphis and pyramids at Suqqara and Giza. Next we are in the port at Heraklion in Crete. We then travel by bus to view the Minoan sites at Knossos and Festos and Roman remains at Gortyna. The final section shows views of Venice in Italy including the canals and St Mark's Square crowded with tourists.
