Wildlife In Cities

Description

Shots of “green corridors” in cities. Local residents Geoffrey & Margaret Ayre and Anne Reeves lead us around the habitats they have preserved for wildlife. We visit Alumwell Middle School, Walsall and Sir Wilfrid Martineau Secondary School, Tile Cross, Birmingham where students have worked to develop wildlife area in their grounds. A ‘Fun Day’ organised by local residents at Yorks Wood, Solihull. Peter Woodward of the Urban Wildlife Group describes how they got together with residents to protect a community nature park from development. Joy Fifer of the ‘Save our Bog’ campaign, a group created to protect the Moseley bog in Birmingham. Children from the King Edwards Grammar School, Aston are seen doing fieldwork on the bog site. Also, an Interview with Simon Evans of the ‘British Trust for Conservation Volunteers’ who are instructing the students. Alan Harris, a warden at the Saltwells Nature Reserve talks about the site. Volunteers describe plants and wildlife in the area. We visit Ladymoor Road and Peascroft Wood in Bilston. David Hickey of the Urban Wildlife Group describes the plan for wildlife conservation in Walsall. Steve York of the North Walsall Neighbourhood Centre details the work his group have done here, helped by local children. We see young children helping fish rubbish out of a pond. A nature trail along an old railway line in Harborne, Birmingham. Planning officer, Peter Hunter talks about a Coventry project to create an experimental natural area.
