Description

The reel opens with two title cards and an end caption. Another caption states that the film was shot during 1964 and 1965. We open with a view of London Road (with St Andrew's church in the background). This is followed by a shot of Midland Road looking towards the railway station followed by a close shot of the station clock. We return to London Road with the outside of the Derbyshire Royal Infirmary (DRI) and then a small bridge over a dried up waterway (Derby Canal?) close to the railway line. We then see a view of flats, a sign for Harper Gardens, a footbridge and quiet industrial streets including more views of the disused Derby Canal. After a brief view of the entrance to the Leicestershire and Derbyshire Yemonary we return to London Road for a shot of the statue of Florence Nightingale outside the DRI. A shot of Bradshaw Way is followed by an establishing shot of the Baptist church on Osmaston Road and more disused canal shots. A view of the weir on the River Derwent is followed by activities at the cattle market. We then see the pedestrianised Main Centre shopping precinct including a statue of a boy on a ram. An exterior shot of the Gaumont Cinema on London Road (showing 633 Squadron) is followed by views of the Spot, St Peter's Church and the junction of St Peter's Street and East Street (with Boots on the corner). More views of East Street follow including a shot of the Newmarket Inn. We then see Cockpit Hill and a street market on the Morledge, views of the bus station, flower market on the Morledge, shots of the River Derwent and river gardens. Next we see the Market Hall from Albert Street and the outside of the Telephone Exchange on Colyear Street followed by a redevelopment area on Colyear Street (Duckworth Square under construction). Next we see Exeter Bridge over the River Derwent followed by St Mary's Bridge and the chapel. Next we see Chester Green. Brief views from a bus on the Cornmarket heading towards the Spot are followed by the Spot from street level and then views of the Arboretum. Home movie shots of a school sports day, and a programme for a visit to Sulzer Bros at Nantes (in 1964) are next before we return to Derby with high angle views over the city. More shots of the open air market at the Morledge follow. Exterior of Corporation Hotel (slightly later c1966). We then see the Market Place including the war memorial, Assembly Rooms and Guildhall. Trolley buses are also seen. Next we see Derby power station (some demolition work underway) and a signs for Amen Alley and a shot of the cathedral and St Mary's Gate, exterior shot of the Old Bell Hotel on Sadler Gate, a view looking up Iron Gate and the Dolphin Inn on Queen Street. We then see the entrance to Derby Technical College on Kedleston Road, followed by a view of Markeaton Hall. The final section shows more high angle views over Derby taken from the top of the cathedral.
