We see boys playing in the farmyard. A man drives a Fordson tractor and later we see a woman driving the tractor pulling a plough. There are shots of a horse and foal in a field and then several other young animals including a kitten, calves and chicks. A young boy is seen playing with the animals. We then see the same boy with his sledge on a lane and then sledging in the snow with friends at Saltby (winter of 1942). The next short section shows the wedding of Mabel and Fred (9 August 1941) where we see the couple outside a church with wedding guests. Further shots of the boy (Gray) marching with a rifle and then driving a tractor (aged four in 1941). We then see the 'breaking in' of a small pony which Gray then gets to ride. Gray's 4th birthday (February 1941) follows showing him playing in snow and being pulled on his sledge. In the next section he plays with a rifle pretending to shoot rabbits. "Gray joins the LDV". A man wearing Local Defence Volunteer (Home Guard) uniform and marching in the farm yard with Gray following behind. The final sections show Gray with cattle on a lane, some inventive inter-titles and Gray on a scooter.
