Description

The film begins showing a woman demonstrating her beauty regime and the voice over explains the subtleties and care taken in each aspect of her look. This is then likened to the care and attention to detail taken in the manufacture of full fashioned and seamless nylon stockings. The film moves on to look in detail at the processes of producing the stockings. At the start of this we see an animated illustration of the knitting process step by step with the addition of the mechanised tools to aid this process. We are also shown the different parts that make up the stocking. The next part of the film shows scenes that are filmed at the Aristoc factory at Langley Mill. Firstly the production of the full fashioned stockings. These are made as flat pieces, known as 'stocking blanks'. We see a long row of machines working in synchronisation. A man collects the completed blanks whilst walking along the factory floor. The next sequence shows how nylon yarn is threaded into the machine. Close ups of the machine in operation show the garment being knitted together. Seam free stockings are manufactured using different machines that knit them in the round, creating a tube shaped 'blank'. We see the process in close up both through the machines in the factory and also on a model. There are also shots of the needles in close up to show their eyes have latches to facilitate the knitting. Another man collects the blanks and conducts a spot check on them. After this the stockings are put into a 'steam cooker'-like chamber to set them. In the next sequence we see women sewing the blanks into stockings and close ups on the machines. There is a section of the film about the inspection of the quality of the products. After this we see the dying process of the stockings including the blending and the machines that carry out the dying. The final process involves the inspections and sorting of the product into sizes. Lastly there is the folding and packaging. We see shots of various Aristoc packaging and boxes.
