Crowds and police await the royal visit outside Rugby School. Children are seen holding union flags prior to her arrival. When the royal cars appear it is raining and the Queen is handed an umbrella for her introductions to staff from the school. The Queen is accompanied by the Duke of Edinburgh and opens a commemorative gateway created to mark the 400th anniversary of the school. She is taken on a tour of the school by the head teacher Mr J. S. Woodhouse taking in the workshops and gymnasium (very dark filming) before watching a running race on the sports grounds (Hillbrow and Caldecott's Piece) from the royal car. The Queen chats to students standing next to an outdoor swimming pool as press photographers look on and a group of pupils demonstrate a sea rescue in the pool. The Queen then helps plant an elm tree and is presented with a book about the history of the school. The royal party make their farewells and are driven away.
