Description

A short opening section shows the ceremonial enthronement of the Rt Reverend Cuthbert Bardsley as the Bishop of Coventry on 5 May 1956. The service which takes place in the old cathedral is led by the Archdeacon of Canterbury, Alexander Sargent. We then see cathedral officials signing architectural drawings of the new cathedral. This is followed by views showing stages in the construction including Cuthbert Bardsley making a site visit. We then see a visit by Princess Margaret (on 6 June 1957). The Lord Mayor of Coventry Pearl Hyde is also present. There are also shots of the architect Basil Spence and others inspecting artwork of Graham Sutherland's tapestry which will be produced for the new building. Another royal visit follows - this time it is the Duchess of Kent on 27 March 1958. There is also another large service in the old cathedral (a brief shot of Kathleen and Jacob Epstein?) and more views of the continuing construction work as the new building takes shape into 1959.
