We open with views of scientists at work as the film considers the role of science in society. This sequence includes a medical surgeon in an operating theatre and a chemist (pharmacist) in a laboratory. Animation is then used to explain the history of alchemy. We then cut to views inside a branch of Boots showing a pharmacist at work dispensing prescriptions to customers (and checking one over the phone to a doctor). The pharmacist is shown at work in the dispensary mixing chemicals. We also see the retail side of the business with customers shopping in Boots and the role of the manager is explained.
We the follow a student (John) from a school biology class through his time in college lectures and a laboratory (these scenes were shot at Bristol College of Technology) and then on a placement in a branch of Boots. John receives practical training in the pharmacy and eventually qualifies and is seen working in another branch. We end the film with John entering his own branch for his first day of work as the manager in charge.
