July 3, 1981 The New York Times reports the first outbreak. A rare often rapidly fatal form of cancer being diagnosed amongst seemingly healthy young men by doctors in New York and California.
A year later the Centres for Disease Control (CDC) link the ailments with blood and 700 deaths are recorded from over 1600 cases diagnosed.
By 1983 the death toll rises to 2304 in the United States.
On April 2nd, 1987 the death toll at 4,135 President Ronald Reagan of The United States in his first major speech on this cancer refers to it as “Public Enemy Number One”
