Views of retired man Jack Wilkinson trying to cross a road as the commentary talks about the loneliness and lack of purpose felt by retired men. View over rooftops and smoking factory chimneys followed by exterior shots of Rubery Owen factory at Darlaston. Inside the factory we see parts for the motor industry and building trades being manufactured. It is the last day at work for Joe Dutton who is retiring. We see him leaving the factory for the last time. Since the end of the war Rubery Owen have run a scheme called the Sons of Rest which provides paid work for men who have retired. Outside one of the firm's Sons of Rest workshops Huw Thomas talks to Sir Alfred Owen of Rubery Owen about the project. Inside the Sons of Rest we see older men working at machines and Huw Thomas also talks to some of them about their role. They are all happy in their work and many have worked for Rubery Owen for more than fifty years.
