The film begins with shots of the riots which took place in Brixton in the Summer of 1981 (ITN or Thames?) followed by stills of disturbances which occurred in Hyson Green on the night of 10 July 1981 and a brief clip from ATV Today showing an injured police officer in Hyson Green. The film looks at the Nottinghamshire police force response to the riots and shows their preparations to go back onto the streets the following night.
Interviewed (and captioned) during the film are: Sergeant Mick Mosley; Inspector Bob Litchfield and his wife Margaret Lichfield; Assistant Chief Constable John Weselby; Sergeant Fred Cooper; Chief Inspector Bob Pattison; Superintendent Ken Smith; and Sergeant John Summerton. They talk about the changing role of the police, the rise in violence towards the force, and at the end of the film touch on the problem of recruitment of ethnic minority officers.
We see shots of Hyson Green and shops with boarded up windows following the disturbance. Police officers are seen in the canteen at the central police station in Nottingham and in their operations room. We also see night shots of officers in Hyson Green wearing anti riot uniforms and day shots of police officers undergoing training in the use of such equipment. Finally there is a short clip from the BBC television series 'Z Cars' to illustrate the police in earlier times.
