Description

Lionel initially meets and interviews Mr Madden outside the training school. Mr Madden explains that the school has been set up to train diesel locomotive drivers, which is in line with British Rail's policy of 'dieselisation'. He then goes on to meet Jack Wootton, the principal of the school, who explains that steam locomotive drivers initially learn the basics of the engine during a long apprenticeship as an engine cleaner. They then progress to become firemen and only then would they be qualified to become a driver. It is these trained steam locomotive drivers that are now being trained to drive diesel locomotives. During this explanantion we see footage of engine cleaning and a fireman at work. They then interrupt Mr Jackson, one of the school's instructors, while he is teaching and then, as they wander around parked engines, Mr Wootton outlines the next stage of the trainee diesel train driver's course.
