Description

We see a gathering in the Market Place in Derby outside the Assembly Rooms of marchers organised by the Derby Trades Council. There are a series of interviews about the march taking place in the city and the significance of the 150th anniversary of an industrial dispute at the Derby Silk Mill (interviews conducted by a woman wearing a Derby Video Project T-shirt). One of the interviewees took part in a similar march in 1934 to mark the centenary of the event. We then see the marchers setting off and parading with union banners through Derby city centre. There are further interviews with marchers, some of whom talk about the on-going miners strike. One of the interviewees is the Labour MP for Derby South, Margaret Beckett. There is also an interview about the play 'Lock Out' which covers events at the Silk Mill strike and is being performed at the Derby Playhouse. We then see a series of speeches including those by Councillor Mick Walker of Derby City Council; Dennis Skinner, the Labour MP for Bolsover (who appeals for support for the miners); and Margaret Becket MP. Following the outdoor speeches the Red Flag is sung.
