The programme is presented by Jon Lander.
We see archive shots of student protests in the late 1960s and early 1970s (Paris, Kent State University in the USA, London School of Economics and Warwick University).
A studio debate comparing the radical student politics of the 1960s with the situation in 1982 chaired by Lander follows. Taking part are Tariq Ali; Kenneth Clarke MP for Rushcliffe in Nottinghamshire; and Frederick Crawford, the Vice Chancellor of Aston University.
In a film item Rob Whitehouse reports from Leicester University where an election is underway for the student union president. We see the candidates (Chris Marriatt, Ken Towl and David Quinn) making speeches during a university husting. Whitehouse talks to Cherry Knowles who was an undergraduate from 1967-70 about how politics has changed since her era, the outgoing president John Ensall talks about the role and current students are asked if they get involved in politics. There are shots of the university and the student union shop.
Next via the outside broadcast unit Bruce Grocott asks students at Warwick University about their politics. He talks to the current union president Robin Edwardes, Mick Hood who is an independent socialist and Steve Rendell of the Federation of Conservative Students. There are also more comments from the studio guests above who are also joined by the current NUS president David Aaronovitch.
