Description

Views of the Goscote council housing estate at Bloxwich where 70 of the 288 houses are currently empty. The decline of the area has prompted many tenants to want to leave and has increased the downward spiral of vandalism and neglect. Interview with maintenance supervisor Derek Evans about the problems of recruiting skilled men because the private firms pay a higher rate. Shot of police on the beat and views of rubbish in gardens. View inside a vandalised house where the fireplace has been ripped out. Interview with Councillor Fred Burt of Walsall council about the problem of neglect. During the interview a tenant arrives to argue with the councillor about what should be done. View inside one of the houses that is well maintained to prove that it is possible. Interview with Mrs Smith who chairs the tenants group and with other local people who want the area improved by the council. Plans to demolish some of the empty houses and build a children's play area have been put on hold due to funding cutbacks. Further shots of the council estate showing children playing amongst the vandalism and litter.
