Description

Bob Hall spends twelve hours over a wet Saturday in Wolverhampton investigations race relations in the town. Views of the town centre with shoppers in wet weather. Shots of the 67 Club which was burnt down last month in mysterious circumstances. Club goers blame a gang of white youths for the blaze. Shots of town centre where gangs gathered last week in so called race riots - the Darlington Street Youth and Community Centre (known locally as the Crypt) and the George Hotel. Exterior of Molineux football ground and pan to youth centre opposite. Interview with unnamed community leader who describes what happened last week.

Shots of Wolves football fans boarding a train at the railway station on their way to a match in Nottingham. Brief shots of the Whitmore Reans district (some shots removed) where last week there was a racist attack. Local MPs Nick Budgen (Conservative Wolverhampton South West) and Renee Short (Labour Wolverhampton North East) are seen walking around the Whitmore Reans area and talking to Bob Hall about problems in the town. They refer to a recent speech by Margaret Thatcher which is thought to have inflamed the issue. We then see anti-racist marchers gathering in West Park and then marching through the town.

Next Hall takes Budgen and Short to a predominantly black youth club where they talk over the issues and also meet a young man who was assaulted by a white gang last week. We return to shots of the anti-Fascist march including brief shots of members of the National Front who attempted to disrupt its progress (again a few shots are missing). Bob Hall talks to one of the leaders of the march about their peaceful aims and the problems of police harassment. We then see people dancing in a reggae club off Dunstall Road and the final scenes show night views of Wolverhampton with police on duty.

Followed by 7.20 of mute trims showing the daylight shots of the town centre (raining) and night shots of police on duty.
