Description

Exterior and interior views of the Nuffield Trust Edgbaston Nursing Home. An increasing number of people are choosing to pay for treatment outside the NHS despite it costing around £400 a week to stay at the Nuffield Hospital. Patients are paying for the service using BUPA or PPP (Private Patient Plant) which are forms of health insurance. Interview with a BUPA representative about the increasing numbers and the claims that some are from 'humble origins'. Second interview about firms offering health insurance as part of employment packages and how this is not always popular with trade unionists. Views of a hospital operation underway and shots of NHS nurses. Interview with an NHS spokesman who is completely opposed to private practice and another who is strongly against private beds being opened in NHS hospitals. Views inside a hospital showing doctors at work. Interview with a consultant who is in favour of a dual role and wants to treat both NHS and private patients.

We then see the Secretary of State for Social Services David Ennals visiting an NHS hospital in Derby where he chats to nurses and tours the facilities. Peter Plant talks to him about private medicine and he says that he wants to withdraw all private beds from NHS hospitals.
