Description

The Transport and General Workers Union have bitterly objected to the fitting of tachographs preferring to continue with their own system of hand written log sheets. However it is expected that Britain will be forced to comply with a new European ruling making tachographs compulsory. We see lorries on the road. Interviews with drivers who are generally in favour of tachographs despite their union’s objections. Shots of tachographs being fitted. Interview at a firm that fits them about their cost and security. Interview with a spokesman for a haulage firm who suggests that they would benefit the industry because if the total numbers of hours for each driver are cut it will mean that more drivers are required. He also points out that some firms refuse to unload lorries fitted with tachographs. We then travel in the cab of driver Les Powell who talks about spot checks in Europe to check tachograph discs. Finally there is an interview with Alan Law of the TGWU who describes the tachograph as a spy.
