Notes

According to The Times the veterans met by the King included a Sergeant Windsor of the Kings Own (Royal Lancashire Regiment) who had joined the army under King William IV in 1836. When we see the King pausing in his carriage alongside the boys from Shrewsbury School he is also reported to have pressed an electric switch to signal the laying of the foundation stone for a new library at the school. The King's pressing time schedule (he was in Shrewsbury for only four hours (including a lunch stop)) prevented him visiting the library (which is on the other side of the Severn) in person.
