In the first film report Vera Gilbert talks to the American author Maya Angelou about her latest volume of autobiography, All God’s Children Need Travelling Shoes’. We also see an extract of her reading poetry on stage at the Lewisham Theatre in London. Next Anjali Singh visits the Midland Arts Centre at Edgbaston in Birmingham to view an exhibition of Bangladeshi arts and crafts. The report opens with shots of a poor Bangladeshi village and a flood (typically the only images of the country that are seen in the UK). Interview with Ruby Ghuznavi of the National Crafts Council of Bangladesh about the aims of the exhibition which has brought craft masters over from Bangladesh. Series of photographs of the country. Exterior shot of the Midland Arts Centre in Cannon Hill Park. Shots of a Bangladeshi woman weaving at the exhibition. Interview with Mita Rahman of the Bangladeshi International Women’s Association and interview with the weaver with Ruby Ghuznavi translating and shots of the weaver talking to children visiting the event. We also see a woman demonstrating Bangladeshi embroidery and a man cutting paper to create art. This is followed by views of art created from Shola (a plant material similar to paper). Back in the studio the final item is a performance by the Reggae Philharmonic Orchestra of their song ‘Sharpeville’.
