Description

Zia Mohyeddin introduces the programme from the studio which is today given over to a film report by Paula Ahluwalia about a recently published study by the Commission for Racial Equality into British immigration policy. The report mainly concerns immigration from the Indian sub continent and the problems faced by families who are often split up by the system.

We see archive film of the case of Pakistan born Anwar Ditta from Rochdale who fought a long campaign to prove that her children were in fact her children and could be allowed to settle in Britain. We also hear of the story of Afia Begum who was deported to Bangladesh following the death of her husband in a house fire in London. Paula interviews Alex Lyon (a former Labour Immigration Minister); Ghulam Meeran (Director of the C.R.E.); Fiona Mactaggart (General Secretary of the Joint Council for the Welfare of Immigrants); Peter Newsam (Chairman of the C.R.E.); and David Waddington (Immigration Minister).

There are also interviews with Iman Ali (UK Immigration Advisory Service in Dhaka); John Moore (British High Commission in Dhaka) and scenes of immigration applications being processed in Bangladesh (this section sourced from outside Central TV - see notes).
