Description

Programme introduced in the studio by Zia Mohyeddin. The entire programme is given over to a film report from Vera Gilbert about Africa Year. She visits the Commonwealth Institute in London where a major exhibition of African culture has been taking place. Throughout the film we see performers inside a tent known as the ‘music village’: the Bagamoyo Cultural Troupe from Tanzania; the Gwari String Group from Nigeria; and the Dundun Percussion Group from Nigeria. There are interviews with Yvonne Neverson from the Commonwealth Institute and Tony Humphries from the Africa Centre about the purposes and aims of the exhibition and we see displays of exhibits. Vera also talks to Farouque Abdillah about the traditional style of women’s clothing in Africa, the kanga and we see women modelling the printed garment. Vera also meets Leslee Willis who is a designer for the Lion Youth Carnival Band and we see her taking a workshop on carnival style and there is a performance from members of the group (to a recorded track). We also see performers taking part in the Notting Hill Carnival in London (also to a recorded sound track) and Vera talks to Albertina Sylvester from Grenada who is a high priestess of calypso for the carnival. Finally Vera talks to artist Sokari Douglas Camp about some of her work which is on display.
