Description

The programme is introduced in the studio by Zia Mohyeddin. The first item is a film report from Vera Gilbert who visits the Commonwealth Institute in London to view a new exhibition about the history of the African continent. We see exhibits on show and Vera talks to Richard Bourne, the deputy director of the Commonwealth Institute, and to Paradzai Chanetsa from the Zimbabwe High Commission. We see archaeological finds from Zimbabwe and Vera asks if the public's view of Africa is changing in the post colonial world.

Back in the studio Zia Mohyeddin introduces a studio performance from the black rockabilly singer Colbert Hamilton accompanied by the Hell Razors.

Next on film, Vera Gilbert reports from Coventry on a self help organisation formed by a group of Asian mothers of children with disabilities. We see the women arriving at the Frank Walsh day centre in Coventry and they talk to Vera about their group and the help it provides. There are also interviews with paediatrician Dr Sue Brown and Tom White who is the director of Coventry social services.

Finally in the studio Peter Emina interviews the author Peter Fryer about his new book 'Staying Power: the history of black people in Britain'.
