Programme introduced by Zia Mohyeddin. The first item continues a studio feature from the last programme in which Hilary Minster talks to the composer John Mayer about techniques in Indian music. This week he discusses time signatures and ragas. Mayer demonstrates and is accompanied by Clem Alford on the sitar and tabla player Ismail Sheikh. The item continues with illustrations from Asian history and views of a studio performance by the sarod player Amjad Khan (a library item?)
Next on film Paula Ahluwalia visits Leicester where a new scheme funded by the city council and Manpower Services Commission aims to find employment for older Asian men. The Leicester Woodwork Workshop teaches skills in producing traditional items from wood, many of which are destined for the local Hindu community. Interview with project co-ordinator Ramnik Kavia and treasurer Rajendra Gosai about the work. We see activities in the workshop as men use lathes and other tools. There is an interview with an Asian man from Zambia and also shots of carpenter Mike Smith who is one of the supervisors.
Finally in the studio Mita Hackett reviews two new black cinema releases. She shows clips from Rue Cases Negres (Black Shack Alley) a Martinique set French language film and the British filmed Fords on Water.
