Programme introduced by Zia Mohyeddin. For the first item Hilary Minster talks to the musician John Mayer in the studio. Mayer is writing a book about the history of world music and explains to Minster the compositional techniques involved in Indian music. At a piano he demonstrates scales and the principle of the raga.
Next in the studio Mita Hackett talks to Ashraf Bashiri from the Society of Asian Lawyers who are proposing a quota system to ensure that there are more black and Asian workers in the legal profession.
This is followed by a film report in which Paula Ahluwalia visits the Highfields Community Centre in Leicester to view an exhibition of Islamic culture. Paula talks to organisers Faisal Hussain and Mohammed Nasim of the Leicester Asian Youth Association. We see displays of photographs and illustrations showing Muslim images and artefacts and Ahluwalia describes the exhibits and refers to a ‘misunderstood religion’.
Finally in the studio Paula Ahluwalia talks to Kaleghl Quinn who is an American expert in martial arts who is in the UK to offer classes in self defence to women. During the interview there are film clips of Quinn leading a self defence class.
