Description

(The audio track is mainly music with the occasional sections of commentary). "1971". The film begins with shots of children in fancy dress costumes and people preparing a series of floats including one from Millfield School, Leicester who have a 'Keep Britain Tidy' theme. The weather is wet. The parade is led by a pipe band from the Seaforth Highlanders.

"1972". Similar scenes of children posing for the camera wearing fancy dress costumes. The lorries have assembled as before (this time the weather is blustery and windy). The parade is again led by the Seaforth Highlanders and includes a DUKW amphibious vehicle, scouts, guides, brownies, a float for the Kingsway School of Dancing. We then see the opening ceremony and the crowning of the carnival queen and prizes being awarded to fancy dress competition winners. We then see views of the tombola and various other games including spin the wheel and lucky dip. We see people looking at Royal Corps of Transport vehicles, a judo display and nurses from Carlton Hayes Hospital. The pipe band perform again on the school playground accompanied by two Scottish dancers.

"1973". We begin again with the young entrants to the fancy dress competition. Next there is the crowning of two May Queens and prizes given to fancy dress winners. We see shots of a brass band leading a procession of floats and brownies and guides along Watergate Lane. Then we see shots of people playing games at the carnival including hoop-la, coin rolling and hook-a-bottle and the tombola. Other attractions include a police dog demonstration, a vintage fire engine and women taking parting a dance performance. Towards the end of the film we see shots of a women’s football match between the Millfield Marvels and the Millfield Rebels (the referee is a man in drag).
