Description

The opening section is c1941 and shows a boy outside the family's holiday cottage with an eel and views of the beach at Rhosneigr on Anglesey. After shots of a black Labrador dog with puppies on a lawn we see a boat race with men's eights racing on the River Isis at Oxford.

The remainder of the reel is taken up with film probably shot by Robin Guy during his time in the Royal Navy during the Second World War (filmed 1943 to 1946). A brief opening shot shows a port and three deck hands being lowered on a crane. We then cut to another short section showing men being punted through tall grass on small boats. Next we see views from an aircraft flying over Egypt including passing close to the Pyramids. Continuing in colour we see views of the Dome of the Rock in Jerusalem, a boy standing in front of an orange tree and men worshiping at the Western Wall. We are then on board a Royal Navy ship travelling through the Suez Canal. Men are seen relaxing on board and we also see another ship signalling. One of the ship's guns is also seen firing into the air.

Next we are in Ceylon (Sri Lanka) with views of lush mountains and a journey on a train. We then continue with more scenes on board the ship with crew members in fancy dress taking part in a 'line crossing ceremony', which is an initiation rite for a sailor making his first crossing of the equator. He undergoes a mock shaving and is then dunked in water.

We return to b/w for views from a smaller boat at sea as an aircraft flies low overhead. Brief shots of tea pickers in Ceylon follow. The next colour section shows a Dutch submarine arriving in dock. Several men who are wearing blindfolds are led from the ship. We are then on board a ship where a group of children, sailors and civilians watch a Punch and Judy show. It appears to be an event for local children as swings and a slid have been set up on deck. The next section shows a harbour following an attack. A ship and sections of the docks are ablaze. A short section showing a group of people sailing on a small boat is followed by views of Sydney harbour in Australia from the deck of a ship. Next in b/w we see a small boat alongside a larger ship and then travel on the larger ship. The British destroyer HMS Ulysses is seen overtaking. Continuing in colour we see HMS Ulysses arriving in at Dartmouth in Devon (probably 1946) followed by HMS Urania. Buses are parked on the harbour for the returning sailors. Robin Guy is seen with his family. The final section shows a b/w shot of Robin (c1939) in a garden.
